🔸Masaan is a deeply emotional film about loss, love, guilt, and trying to find a way forward. Set in Varanasi, it follows a few different characters whose lives are shaped by death, social pressure, family expectations, and painful mistakes. Their stories slowly begin to connect, but the film never feels like it is rushing toward some big dramatic moment. Instead, it spends time with these people and lets us understand what they are going through. I really liked the way the film shows both the beauty and the harshness of everyday life. Varanasi is not just a background here. The river, the burning ghats, the crowded streets, and the constant presence of death all become part of the mood of the story. It gives the film a very strong sense of place.
🔸The performances are another major strength. The cast brings a lot of honesty to the characters, especially in the quieter scenes where there is not much dialogue. You can feel the sadness and frustration behind their faces and small gestures. The film also does a good job showing how society can make a person's pain even harder to deal with. Caste, reputation, family pressure, and ideas about what is considered acceptable all affect the characters in different ways. At the same time, the film is not completely hopeless. There are moments of kindness, romance, friendship, and even humour that give the story some warmth. I liked that balance because the film understands that life can be painful without being completely without hope.
🔸The emotional side of Masaan is what stayed with me most. Some parts are genuinely heartbreaking, while others are quiet and thoughtful. The different stories do not all have the same impact, and I think the film becomes slightly uneven in places. A few moments also feel a little too carefully written, which takes away some of the natural feeling. But overall, there is a lot to admire here. The writing, performances, setting, and emotional atmosphere all come together beautifully, especially when the film looks at people trying to move beyond things that have already happened. It is a sad film, but it also understands the importance of moving forward. A strong and moving drama with plenty of heart.
Verdict : Very Good
DC Rating : 4/5
